Juhana Marttinen Architects / Projects / Turku Pedestrian Bridge / Cladding system

The cladding system is based on polished hexagonal tiles which are woven together with steel wire. The tiles and the wires form two meters wide elements. The elements are then placed on a ridig steel frame attached to the concrete body of the bridge. The faces of the tiles are flat and create miniature mirrors reflecting the surrounding scenery beautifully.

The shape of each tile is algorithmically calculated to take into account the curvature of the bridge. The sizes, shapes and side flaps of the tiles are individual. A small elevation difference is formed between the tiles, much like the rectangular tiles on a bathroom floor.

The jury of the competition thought this is not geometrically possible, however the pictures below prove otherwise, as the geometry behind the images was modeled 1:1.

In addition to the beautiful surface, the tiles provide perfect weather protection for the actual bridge structure.
